AI in Web Design: What Actually Works in 2025

We tested AI tools on real client projects for six months. Here is what genuinely accelerates production, what creates more work, and what to ignore entirely.

For the past six months we integrated AI tools into our actual production workflow across 12 client projects. Not a sandbox test. Not a demo. Real projects with real deadlines and real clients. Here is a completely honest account of what happened.

What genuinely saved us time

Copywriting first drafts: AI is excellent at producing a structured first draft of website copy when given a detailed brief. We cut initial copy drafting time by approximately 60%. The key word is "first draft" — every piece still required significant editing for tone, accuracy, and brand voice. But starting from something is dramatically faster than starting from nothing. Code generation for boilerplate: Repetitive component structures, API route templates, and utility functions are significantly faster with AI assistance. We estimate a 40% reduction in time on boilerplate code specifically.

What created more work than it saved

AI-generated design: Every AI image generation tool we tested produced results that needed more post-production work than simply designing from scratch. The outputs are impressive as concepts but not production-ready. We stopped using them after month two. Automated SEO content: AI-generated blog posts and service page copy consistently lacked the specific expertise signals that Google rewards. The content was grammatically correct but strategically thin. We produced better results faster by writing ourselves.

What to ignore entirely

Any tool claiming to replace the design process entirely. Any tool claiming to automate client strategy. The judgment required to understand what a specific client needs, in a specific market, at a specific point in their growth — that is irreplaceable by current AI. The clients who hired us did not hire us for our typing speed. They hired us for our thinking.

The honest conclusion

AI is a junior assistant, not a senior partner. Used correctly, it makes skilled practitioners faster. Used incorrectly, it creates an illusion of productivity while producing work that needs to be redone. The agencies thriving with AI right now are the ones using it to amplify craft, not replace it.
